The mechadism of adhesion between a contaminant particle and the surface (refer to illustration)

The contaminant is not adhered to the surface directly but through the capillary effect of a liquid memberance layer.

The cohesive force between the contaminant and the surface can be canculated by the formula: F= 2pi*dy

F: The adhesive force

Y: Surface tension of the liquid memberance

D: Particle diameter

Base on this formula, the key to eliminate the contaminant is to change the value of Y. That is the main reason why organic solvents, such as alcohol, are good for cleaning.
